The perfect staycation?
Updated: Dec 7, 2021
Another Sunday, another venue! We headed over to The Black Horse in Thurnham for lunch. There is so much to say about this place so here are some summary points:
🔸️Covid safe - indoors and outside;
🔸️ Pub, restaurant and hotel;
🔸️Wedding venue;
🔸️Brilliant food;
🔸️Surrounded by country walks; and
🔸️Very dog friendly!
I'll start with the food...My compliments go to the chef! I have been to lots of places and had a good Sunday lunch but this was one of the best ones I've had in a while. We started with a sharing charcuterie board. I have found that in some places despite these boards being sharers, they are very sparse. Not at The Black Horse. The board included a tasty selection of cured meats, little pickles which were bursting with flavour, a strong chutney, fresh bread and what I would call a proper homemade pate with a butter top 😋 the perfect beginning to our meal!
Next the main event, I had roast beef and my partner had roast lamb. The meat is served pink (which is perfect for me but if you like yours well done just ask). Just by looking at the trim around the beef you could see that the meat had been seasoned properly before cooking. The roast potatoes again seasoned properly and a great size the three you got was all you needed. The gravy rich in flavours and a HUGE proper Yorkshire pud 😍 fresh veg and I'm not sure what was done to the cauliflower cheese but it was heavenly! I could have licked my plate clean.
The only disappointment that I experienced whilst being here was I wanted to try a few of their desserts but was a little too full🙈, so I decided to go with something light and asked for the lemon sorbet but they had run out... Just means I'll have to visit again soon, what a shame 😉😁
You'll notice from my photos that there are specials blackboards throughout the inside of the property, make sure you take a look🤤
We sat outside during our meal and all of the tables are separated by wooden partitions, socially distanced and once again the property is surrounded by hand sanitisers. There is a 2 in 2 out policy in the bathrooms and a sign at the bar to state that only one customer may be up to order at a time as well as plastic screens. Face masks are worn at peoples discretion.
Next, the venue itself. What a beautiful building 😍 it is quite the hidden treasure. The original pub building dating back to the 18th century. Off the beaten track, it boasts wonderful country views and walks and the decor inside the pub is something special with dark beams exposed brick, burnt down candles and the ceiling is full of hops!
Given that more of us are looking for staycations I think this would be a perfect get away. Beautiful views, lovely food, Kent landmarks to explore...what more can you ask for from a pub? The pub has all the details of the country walks around it and even your dog can join you on your staycation for an extra £10!
Many thanks to the team at The Black Horse for a perfect Sunday. We will be back again soon.
